Dr. Biorat is my name and biological rationalism is my game. Myself and my friend and colleague, Dr. Fluffy Bunny are now blogged up and ready to take the world on a new course to health and happiness. As most good veterinarians will attest to, humans occupy only one part of the living assemblage and being an evolutionary dead-end (nothing really useful we can turn into from here) we play only a small part in the natural processes of the biosphere. But do we?? Evidence is plentiful that our impact is more negative than positive.
This is where the problem begins. As we prosper culturally and our heads swell with pride with the achievements of civilisation, we tend to forget the very basic rules of biology and play the game only on economic, social and civil terms. This leads to overzealous pursuit of wealth and the unavoidable consequence of squabbling over the earth’s finite space and resources.
There does not seem to be any limit or let up in the direction of human social progress. We are consumed by the concept of growth and we are prepared to throw all notions of kindness, fairplay and empathy out the window in the pursuit of human comfort.
How do all the other non-human life forms figure in this grand plan? Well they don’t. A select few become the darlings of various nature documentaries and support the career paths of popular zoologists but for the main part non-human species are the innocent victims of human progress.
Fluffy and Biorat have spent much of their lives in the battle to save species from extinction. This mission is exhausting and particularly unrewarding as the natural habitats of various species decline in quality and become less able to sustain their tenants. The processes of degradation world-wide have brought many species to their knees and there is now a long queue of life forms on the brink.
I know, I know, all this is a conspiracy peddled by people like us because we gain so much from spreading this enviro-socialist propaganda. See how wealthy we are? See how famous, how powerful we are? Whereas the more responsible ones who make vast amounts of money out of environmental exploitation can be trusted without question when they assure us humans have nothing to do with environmental change.
Sooner or later Biorat’s rules will kick in because the first and only game in town is biology not economics.
Dr. Fluffy Bunny (thankfully not his real name) really did graduate from veterinary school. It all happened so very long ago but he can still remember the disaster that was his very first cow caesarian. Departing mixed practice as quickly as he could he embarked on a twenty year career that saw him annoy, badger, bedevil, bug, disturb, harry, hassle, hector, hound, importune, irk, nag, plague, provoke, tease, torment, and worry animals both captive and wild, common and endangered, alive and dead, from all walks, flights and swims of life. His favourite things are failing to dart large dangerous animals over long distances, failing to save critically endangered species from extinction and failing to convince people that post mortems represent wonderful learning experiences. His least favourite things are long walks on the beach (unless there are sea turtles), mindless occupational health and safety officers (are there any that aren’t?) and atheists who use the terms “devil’s advocate” and “oh my god”.
